Aromatherapy has been practiced for thousands of years. It was used in ancient Egypt, Judea, Greece, Rome, Persia & India for healing, sanitizing and preserving. The use of the aromatic plant oils combined with massaging is one of the major differences between Western and Asian traditional therapeutic massage. Even the word massage originates from the Hebrew word Meshach to anoint (rub) with oil, to consecrate. This word shows how important the ancient healers (users of aromatic oils) were. In biblical times frankincense and myrrh oils were used as sanitizers to protect from infection at such times as child birth (sound familiar?).

Today we are lucky to see the modern developments in aromatherapy. Extraction of oil has been improved by scientific methods. Analysis of chemical components gives us clues to additional uses of traditional oils. Unification of the world through transportation and communication brings us oils from plants in once remote areas.

Aromatherapy makes are world better by healing illness both physical and psychosomatic, it introduces pleasing scents, improves our moods and cleanses. How wonderful is this gift from the plant kingdom to us in the animal kingdom. Let us maintain the environment in such a way as to assure this rich treasure for our children and their children. We do need each other and can not survive without.
